Chris Townsend is a partner in Ropes & Gray's asset management group based in London and one of the leading advisers in Europe on private fund formation and structuring. He acts for some of the world's most sophisticated asset managers—spanning buyout, growth, credit, real assets and venture—guiding them through every stage of fund establishment and operation.
Chris brings valuable depth across the full spectrum of private fund structures. His expertise encompasses traditional closed-ended vehicles, long-dated and evergreen funds, multi-currency and levered arrangements, separately managed accounts, co-investments and carried interest schemes across multiple jurisdictions. He is particularly recognized for his work on complex international structuring mandates where cross-border considerations demand both technical precision and commercial judgement.
In addition to his fund formation practice, Chris has built a substantial secondaries capability, having led a significant number of GP-led transactions, fund restructurings, LP portfolio sales and bespoke liquidity solutions—advising on some of the most structurally intricate deals in the market.
