A GLOBAL MINDSET

“A lawyer with a global mindset is somebody who understands the cultural and other differences that inform client decisions and client decision-making. It’s somebody who is sensitive to the fact that not everybody thinks exactly the same way about business or cultural issues.”

David Chapin, managing partner

At Ropes & Gray, we’re committed to helping our attorneys enrich their legal skills with a truly global mindset. All lawyers who join the firm are encouraged to take advantage of our GO (Global Opportunity) programs. Attorneys can immerse themselves in a new culture or city in one of our 11 offices worldwide—or on occasion, with one of the firm’s clients—and gain invaluable career experience along the way.

We offer a range of global mobility options designed to enhance our attorneys’ professional development while ensuring that we have the right skills and experience in place at all times for our clients.

GO Strategic

GO Strategic allows attorneys across the firm to take advantage of temporary and permanent placements that arise as a result of specific client or practice group needs around our network.

GO First

In certain circumstances, the firm will pre-approve future moves to other Ropes & Gray offices for incoming associates.

  • For more information, contact Amy Ross, director of attorney personnel and international services.

GO Fellows

This selective fellowship program will offer a small number of associates each year the opportunity to enrich their lives and careers through placement in their choice of office for 18 to 24 months. The application and selection process will kick off in the fall, and all associates in good standing are eligible to apply. Final decisions will be made by the policy committee after consultation with the relevant practice group leaders and office managing partners.

  • GO Fellows will serve as the firm’s ambassadors for global mobility by sharing their experiences and serving as resources for their peers.
  • The GO fellowship includes participation in an annual GO Fellows Summit.
  • For more information or to request an application, contact Jane Williamson, director of attorney development and career planning.

GO Client

GO Client provides our associates with in-house experience at one of the firm’s clients. While on secondment, attorneys learn firsthand about the client’s business needs and perspectives, and develop long-lasting relationships that benefit the attorney, the client and the firm.
