Health care partner David Peloquin and health care counsel Leslie Thornton will present at the American Health Law Association (AHLA) 2026 Winter Institute: Advising Providers & AI in Health Care Conferences in Las Vegas on February 11-12.

David will present on the panel titled “AI in Clinical Research.” The panelists will explore topics including when the use of an AI tool in a research study constitutes a device regulated by the US Food & Drug Administration or triggers application of state AI laws; ensuring that data used to train the AI tool are used and disclosed in a manner that complies with applicable privacy laws; managing conflicts of interest that frequently arise with AI manufacturers; and apportioning responsibility between the research sponsor and research site for regulatory obligations arising from the use of an AI tool.

Leslie will speak on the panel titled “Federal Research Funding Round-Up and Predictions: Where are We Now, How We Got Here, and What’s to Come in 2026.” The panelists will provide a 2025 review of federal research funding matters—from executive orders to federal agency guidance to litigation—that have fundamentally reshaped both pre-award strategy and post-award administration for universities, academic medical centers, and other research institutions. The panelists also will offer an outlook on potential issues and actions to come in 2026.
