On May 19, Doug Hallward-Driemeier, partner and head of the firm’s appellate and Supreme Court practice, served as the commencement speaker at DePauw University, from which he received his Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, in political science.

In his remarks to the class of 2024, Doug reflected on his career and noted the importance of allyship. “If there is a theme to those things in my life about which I am most proud, it is the theme of allyship,” said Doug. “Of being sensitive to the experiences of others, especially those who are less fortunate, and of being willing to stand up with and, when necessary, for them. It can and should be a fundamental part of your everyday life.”

“Without question, the most meaningful thing that I have done in my professional life is my role arguing before the Supreme Court in favor of marriage equality in Obergefell v. Hodges,” said Doug. “My involvement with that case convinced me of the imperative that, if you are going to fight for justice for any group, you must fight for justice for all groups. Allyship was essential to our success in Obergefell.”
