In a Financial Times Ignites article, benefits consulting group principal Harvey Cotton discussed employer health insurance plan coverage issues for GLP-1 weight loss drugs.

Harvey explained that employers, for the most part, have broad latitude to determine what benefits they want to cover on their company health insurance plan. Employers can also generally require employees to meet eligibility criteria like minimum BMI thresholds, prior authorization or only cover the drugs for certain conditions – provided those rules apply uniformly across the health plan.

“If an employer says, ‘I don't want to offer GLP-1 drugs for weight loss,’ the employer can do that. The law does give the discretion to make those calls,” said Harvey.
