Ropes & Gray is sad to announce that partner and dear colleague Benoit Lavigne unexpectedly passed away on August 30, 2026.
Benoit was a finance lawyer who first joined Ropes & Gray in 2013, becoming partner in 2015. After leaving the firm, he returned in 2024 as a partner in our London office. With deep experience in complex, cross-border finance matters, Benoit advised private credit providers and other underwriters, as well as borrowers, on acquisition finance, general corporate lending, asset-based lending, restructuring, and workouts.
Ranked in Chambers Global 2026, Benoit was described as “very sharp and extremely commercial.” An innovator in the field of finance, Benoit was known for pioneering financing structures in European markets. He was the type of lawyer that colleagues and clients valued deeply for being thorough, technically gifted, and committed to excellence.
Benoit was someone who made Ropes & Gray a better place. He was warm, kind, and a good listener. He had a gift for connecting with people, with friendships across the firm. Deeply invested in associates’ careers, Benoit led the charge for team dinners and social events, bringing a positive energy felt by all.
Colleagues and clients valued Benoit deeply, and he will be profoundly missed. Our deepest sympathies go to Benoit's family, loved ones, and many friends.
