Mergers & acquisitions partner and co-chair of Ropes & Gray’s strategic transactions practice group Jackie Cohen was a guest on The Deal's Drinks With The Deal podcast, hosted by senior writer David Marcus, to talk about the career moves that have shaped her, the moments when she advocated for herself, and how she builds a life outside a demanding M&A practice.
Jackie traces her path from aspiring doctor to M&A lawyer, including a detour to open her own yarn business – an experience she valued, but one that showed her how much she missed working with clients. "They come to you because they have a really complicated problem that they need somebody to help them solve," she said. "I really liked being that person, and I missed being that person. That is why I went back to practicing law."
From there, Jackie reflects on her decision to join Ropes & Gray and offers candid advice for law students and young lawyers on the value of being sincere about what they want and recognizing that there is more than one way to practice law.
