Ropes & Gray Attorneys Advise GNC in Class Action Settlement

Ropes & Gray represented General Nutrition Centers Inc. in a class action suit in which plaintiffs alleged that the company violated California competition and consumer protection laws by selling products containing anabolic steroids without requiring prescriptions. The parties reached a court-approved $1.5 million settlement on August 19. The case is In re: Steroid Hormone Products Cases in the Superior Court for the State of California, County of Los Angeles.

In a Law360 article on the matter, Tsai noted that GNC never manufactured any of the products at issue and denied that its actions violated California law. Judge Jane L. Johnson heralded the efforts of attorneys on both sides of the six-year litigation, commenting, "I think everyone did a really good job on this long road."
