The American Bar Association recently honored retired partner Hardin Matthews for his dedication to pro bono service. Hardin received the prestigious Janet Spragens Pro Bono Award, which recognizes tax lawyers who demonstrate an ongoing commitment to pro bono activities.
A tax & benefits lawyer at Ropes & Gray for 39 years, Hardin retired from the firm in 2013. Upon his retirement, he spent a year as a fellow for the Access to Justice Program, representing needy clients at the Low-Income Tax Clinic run by Greater Boston Legal Services.
While his fellowship lasted one year, Hardin’s commitment to the tax clinic continues to this day. He has spent more than 3,700 hours representing low-income individuals in governmental tax audits, appeals, collections, litigation and other matters.
