In June 2014, Intellectual Asset Management Patent 1000: The World’s Leading Patent Practitioners (IAM) ranked Ropes & Gray’s intellectual property group among the leading firms internationally.

Overall, the firm was ranked in nine geographic regions, including new rankings in the international category, which spotlights firms with a strong IP presence in multiple regions that frequently provide cross-border advice. Ropes & Gray increased its firm rankings in Washington, D.C. for litigation, in California for litigation and in Massachusetts for prosecution, and maintained its national rankings in the United States, China and Japan, as well as its state rankings in Illinois and New York. The firm was ranked for litigation, licensing/transactional and prosecution.

In addition to the firm’s rankings, 25 partners received 29 individual rankings, including five newly ranked partners.

IAM commends Ropes & Gray’s global capabilities, noting that its “streamlined international services and collaborative approach have contributed significantly to the group’s impressive growth in recent years.”

Highlighting the litigation teams, IAM remarks that the firm’s “big league contentious practice… appears in more trials than most – and wins more than most.”

The publication also notes the cross-practice collaboration: “Unlike many top-end trial practices, it also supports a robust rights management operation and, with a potent presence in Asia and Europe, is adept at devising global protection and enforcement strategies.”

Commenting on the firm’s corporate practice, IAM writes, “national patent powerhouse Ropes & Gray has a peerless reputation in the IP transactional space. The lawyers here are some of the most commercially savvy around, making them a favourite among in-house counsel and boardroom executives at world-beating technology companies.”

Ropes & Gray’s IP practice is consistently ranked in leading publications including Chambers USA, Chambers Global and Chambers Asia, Legal 500, Managing IP, World Trademark Review, and the LMG Life Sciences Guide, among others. Recently, the firm was featured on The National Law Journal’s 2014 IP Hot List as a leader on the latest trends in IP law and by U.S. News & World Reports as “Firm of the Year” for its patent litigation practice.
