Gretchen Greene is the Chief of Artificial Intelligence at Ropes & Gray. In this role, Gretchen leads firmwide AI strategy and adoption across global offices and practices to deliver measurable client value and accelerate innovation. She is among the first AI chiefs in an AmLaw 25 firm and brings 15+ years at the intersection of technology, law, and governance, building and leading cross-functional teams and shaping global privacy and AI policy for complex, high-impact products.
Gretchen is a recognized thought leader in AI, contributing to global legislation, industry standards, and best practices for tools and governance. Her experience includes global AI adoption, executive strategy, and consulting in safety-critical sectors such as clinical medicine, biotech manufacturing, and research institutions.
An attorney, computer vision scientist, and machine learning and autonomous vehicle engineer, Gretchen brings a uniquely multi-disciplinary perspective informed by roles spanning startup founder, board chair, national laboratory mathematician, and law firm partner. She has advised stakeholders from pre-seed research-driven companies to multinational enterprises and government agencies, identifying practical policy, product, and technical solutions to novel AI and data challenges.
Her work has been published in science, policy, and machine learning journals, and has been featured by major media including the Economist, Forbes China, and the BBC.
Gretchen holds a CPhil and MS in mathematics from UCLA and a JD from Yale. She began her legal career as a tax and benefits attorney at Ropes & Gray.
