The increasingly prevalent Internet-connected devices, such as cars, medical devices, and home appliances, raise new privacy and information security questions. Panelists/speakers will discuss the regulatory landscape for these products and the latest legal trends and issues affecting this increasingly important area, including the recent HTC settlement, in which the Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”) took the aggressive stance that security design vulnerabilities can constitute “unfair” trade practices. The discussion will also address the US and European Union guidance and enforcement trends in this area, including the EU Working Party’s guidance to device manufacturers, the FTC’s upcoming workshop on this so-called “Internet of Things.”
