Ropes & Gray was honored at the China Law & Practice Awards held in Beijing on Sept. 17 for the firm’s work on two high-profile deals in the energy and real estate sectors, respectively.

The firm was recognized for its involvement in LDK Solar’s global restructuring, which was named “Energy & Natural Resources Deal of the Year.” Ropes & Gray advised bondholders in the restructuring of more than $700 million in offshore claims, representing the first judicially approved, multijurisdictional debt restructuring of its kind for a Chinese company. The LDK Solar deal was recognized earlier in 2015 by The Asian Lawyer as the “Finance Deal of the Year: Insolvency & Restructuring,” and the firm was named “Restructuring Team of the Year” for its bondholder work at the International Financial Law Review (IFLR) Asia Awards. Special situations partner James Douglas (London) and business restructuring partner Mark Bane (New York) led the Ropes & Gray team representing the bondholders in the transaction.

Ropes & Gray was also honored for its representation of Blackstone in its joint venture with China Vanke, China’s largest residential developer, which was recognized as the “Real Estate & Construction Deal of the Year.” The deal involved the formation of two British Virgin Islands JVs to invest in logistics properties in China and was the first transaction to receive clearance from the PRC Ministry of Commerce under the simplified merger filing procedure. A team from Ropes & Gray advised Blackstone on due diligence issues relating to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

The China Law & Practice Awards, sponsored by both China Law & Practice and The American Lawyer, honors firms involved in the “most exciting and creative transactions of the past year.”
