On March 24, New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo launched the Liberty Defense Project, a statewide coalition of 230 private sector law firms, legal departments, bar associations, and advocacy associations that comprise the nation’s first public-private immigrant legal defense initiative. The initiative was created in response to the surge in demand for help that is currently overwhelming the nonprofit organizations that serve immigrants in the state.

Ropes & Gray is one of 21 law firms partnering with the Liberty Defense Project. The Carnegie Corporation of New York and the Ford Foundation will be dedicated philanthropic partners providing financial resources to the project. The Liberty Defense Project will provide free legal assistance to immigrants, including: representation in deportation proceedings; completion and filing of green card applications, temporary status, and work permits; and conducting outreach and educational initiatives to support families facing deportation or detention.

“New York is a beacon of hope and opportunity for all, and immigrants have always been part of the fabric of this great state,” Governor Cuomo said in a press release. “During these stormy times, it’s critical all New Yorkers have access to their full rights under the law. The first-of-its-kind Liberty Defense Project will provide legal support to protect immigrants and ensure this state is living up to the values embodied by the Lady in our Harbor.”
