In its “2018 Pro Bono Scorecard,” released this week, The American Lawyer ranked Ropes & Gray eighth, the firm’s highest-ever ranking. It also ranked Ropes & Gray 11th on its International Pro Bono Scorecard. The recognition underscores Ropes & Gray’s dedication to public service, a hallmark of Ropes & Gray, rooted in the example set by our founders more than a century and a half ago. Our pro bono program allows attorneys across our global offices to assist individuals and organizations that might otherwise lack access to legal services. Our work spans many areas, including advising on complex immigration and asylum questions, advocating for those who have been wrongfully imprisoned, assisting low-income and homeless individuals with debt management, helping to meet the needs of military veterans, applying the law in novel ways to assist victims of human trafficking and sexual assault, and advocating for the LGBTQ community, among other issues.
To compile its annual Pro Bono Scorecard, The American Lawyer uses two metrics, weighted equally: a combination of average pro bono hours per lawyer, and the percentage of lawyers at a firm who perform more than 20 hours of pro bono work. For purposes of the scorecard, AmLaw only counts U.S. pro bono work. For the International Pro Bono Scorecard, The American Lawyer evaluates the same metrics but for non-U.S. lawyers.
This recognition is the most recent in a series of pro bono accolades the firm has received over the past year, which include:
- In its 2018 Asia-Pacific Innovative Lawyers report, the Financial Times recognized Ropes & Gray’s international pro bono program for its collaboration with Liberty Asia to develop a toolkit to help anti-trafficking groups.
- The National Law Journal honored Ropes & Gray on its 2017 Pro Bono Hot List, recognizing the firm for winning a motion for a new trial for George Perrot, who had been wrongfully imprisoned for 30 years.
- The 2019 Vault “Best Law Firms to Work For” guide ranked Ropes & Gray number six among U.S. firms in the Pro Bono category.
