Gavin Alexander Appointed to New Mass. Supreme Judicial Court Standing Committee on Lawyer Well-Being
On Jan. 9, the Justices of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court announced the formation of a new Standing Committee on Lawyer Well-Being, naming special situations associate Gavin Alexander (Boston) as one of the Committee’s fifteen members. Mr. Alexander previously served as Co-Chair of the Massachusetts LGBTQ Bar Association and on the Board of Directors of the National LGBT Bar Association. He also presently serves on the Boston Bar Association’s Diversity & Inclusion Section Steering Committee.
The Standing Committee is charged with planning and overseeing efforts to enhance the well-being of lawyers, judges and law students in the Commonwealth. In September of 2018, the Supreme Judicial Court formed an initial Steering Committee on Lawyer Well-Being to explore and report to the Justices on the state of well-being among practicing Massachusetts lawyers. That committee issued its report in July of 2019, and the new Standing Committee will continue examining the issues addressed therein and begin implementing recommendations to improve the working life of lawyers in whatever setting or area of law they practice and to address the aspects of the legal profession that contribute to unhealthy levels of anxiety and stress, isolation, mental health challenges, and alcohol or other substance use disorders.
