In the March issue of American Health Lawyers Association’s AHLA Connections Magazine, partner Mark Barnes (Boston) joined Association of American Universities vice president for policy Toby Smith in authoring an article discussing foreign influence in federally-funded research.

The authors explain that U.S. government organizations, such as the National Institutes of Health, have raised concerns about theft or intentional disclosure of United States-funded research and intellectual capital, with these concerns focused on U.S. researchers who have failed to disclose activities and affiliations with universities or other entities in the People’s Republic of China. The NIH has deployed an array of requirements as tools aimed to ensure adequate disclosure and vetting of foreign ties of U.S.-based investigators.
