Ryan Rohlfsen Moderates Government Enforcement Roundtable During A.C.E.S. Compliance Summit

Litigation & enforcement partner Ryan Rohlfsen, co-chair of the firm’s global anti-corruption and international risk practice, moderated a panel titled “Government Enforcement Roundtable: Priorities, Trends and Considerations for Building a Best in Class Compliance Program for 2021 and Beyond,” during the Anti-corruption, Anti-bribery, Export Controls & Sanctions (A.C.E.S) virtual compliance summit held on Nov. 12 and 13. 

The A.C.E.S. panel featured insights from Adam Butschek, Compliance Specialist, Office of Defense Trade Controls Compliance, U.S. Department of State, Lorinda Laryea, Assistant Chief, FCPA Unit, U.S. Department of Justice and Robert I. Dodge, Assistant Director, FCPA Unit, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. 

During the November 12 discussion, panelists discussed expectations and considerations for companies improving their compliance programs during COVID-19 and beyond. For example, the government officials stressed that businesses should not try to use the pandemic as an excuse for non-compliance. As a best practice, they emphasized that companies should communicate with government agencies freely and openly about pandemic-related challenges and how the business is tailoring their compliance program to address those challenges.
