In a Global Data Review article, data, privacy & cybersecurity partner and co-chair Ed McNicholas (Washington, D.C.) discussed an Arizona proposal to ban publically funded ransomware payments.

Ed explains that Arizona’s proposal is an example of the states working as the ‘laboratories of democracy’ to create a new approach to a challenging issue, but it will inflict near term costs on Arizona’s agencies, cities, and citizens.

Ed notes that ransomware is so effective against state and local municipalities because frequently IT budgets have been neglected for years in favor of keeping taxes lower and neglecting IT modernization spending.
