Articles recently published by Korean legal outlets Law Times (Korea) and Thebell profiled private equity partner Jaewoo Lee, who recently assumed the role of Seoul office managing partner. The pieces review Ropes & Gray’s decade in Korea as the first foreign law firm among international law firms to open in the country.

Thebell writes that “Many global law firms threw their hats in the ring when the Korean legal market opened. But quite a few have since backed out, having achieved little amid local Korean law firms’ strong performance. On the other hand, some [global] law firms have proudly survived and made their presence in the market known. A good example is Ropes & Gray, [whose Seoul office is known as] “Korea’s No. 1 Foreign Legal Consultant Office.”

In the interviews, Jaewoo outlines Ropes & Gray’s success in the Korean legal market and his career path leading to managing partner. “It is an honor to take on an important role at such a meaningful time,” Jaewoo said in Law Times, continuing: “The first 10 years of Ropes & Gray’s Seoul office were spent on building foundation and nurturing stability to become a leader in the areas of M&A, private equity, and intellectual property. We are now looking forward to expand into various practices and appropriately grow the size of our office.”

The announcement of Jaewoo’s appointment to Seoul office managing partner on Aug. 1, can be reviewed here.
