Ropes & Gray’s intellectual property practice placed highly in the 2012 Chambers USA, Legal 500, Practical Law Company (PLC), Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) Patent 1000, and World Trademark Review 1000 Guides in both firm and individual rankings.

The 2012 Chambers USA Guide ranked Ropes & Gray’s intellectual property practice in California, Massachusetts, New York and nationwide. Chambers’ sources describe the firm’s IP practice as "A practice that is deep and has lots of breadth." Seven partners were recognized as leaders in the field:

  • Robert Goldman (California)
  • Edward Black (Massachusetts)
  • Edward Kelly (Massachusetts)
  • Jesse Jenner (New York)

In the Legal 500 U.S. rankings, the firm’s intellectual property practice was ranked among leading firms in the areas of patent litigation and patent licensing and transactional work.

This year’s PLC Guide ranked Ropes & Gray’s intellectual property practice for the first time in California and Illinois, and also gave the practice the highest possible ranking in New York and nationwide. In addition, PLC ranked Ropes & Gray’s intellectual property practice as ‘highly recommended’ in Massachusetts.

Six partners, four of whom are newly ranked, are listed as leading intellectual property lawyers by PLC:

  • James Batchelder (California)
  • David McIntosh (Massachusetts)
  • Jesse Jenner (New York)
  • Denise Loring (New York)

Ropes & Gray’s intellectual property practice was also ranked in the inaugural edition of the 2012 IAM Patent 1000 Guide and was one of only three firms in New York to appear on the listings for licensing, prosecution, and litigation. In the contentious sphere, IAM says Ropes & Gray’s IP practice has “the horsepower to handle any case and is more than the equal of any other firm on the market”. Thirteen partners were recognized in the inaugural edition of the IAM Patent 1000 Guide:

  • Edward Black – Licensing
  • Jesse Jenner – Litigation
  • Geoffrey Lin – Licensing and Prosecution
  • Denise Loring – Litigation

The firm's intellectual property corporate practice was recognized in the 2012 World Trademark Review 1000 Guide in Massachusetts and New York for the second year in a row. Sources note the practice is “Known for its “first-class” trademark prosecution unit”. Boston-based IP rights management counsel Emilia Cannella was ranked as a leading attorney in Massachusetts in the prosecution and strategy section.
