On Sept. 15, The American Lawyer’s annual Global Legal Awards recognized Ropes & Gray as a co-grand prize winner of the “Global Citizenship” award for the firm’s pro bono work with The Nature Conservancy to preserve imperiled coastal areas in small island nations through debt swaps. The co-grand prize winners for Global Citizenship were selected from winners in subcategories including Global CSR Initiative of the Year, Global Pro Bono Dispute of the Year, Global Pro Bono Project of the Year (Asia), Global Pro Bono Project of the Year (Africa), Global Pro Bono Deal Program of the Year (Social Enterprise) and Global Pro Bono Deal of the Year (Environmental) – the category in which Ropes & Gray was honored.

In addition, the firm was recognized for its representation on the following three matters:

  • Global M&A Deal of the Year (Latin America/Mexico) for our representation of Centerbridge Partners and Monarch Capital in the sale of Satélites Mexicanos S.A. de C.V. (Satmex) to Eutelsat Communications.
  • Global M&A Deal of the Year (China Private Equity) for our representation of China Everbright Structured Investment Holdings Ltd. as a member of a buyer consortium that acquired Focus Media Holdings Ltd. in a take-private deal.
  • Global Finance Deal of the Year (Acquisition Finance) for our representation of Numericable and its parent, Altice S.A., in connection with the financing for its bid to acquire SFR.

These awards honor law firms and in-house departments that played a substantial role in the most distinguished cross-border work performed between January 1, 2013 and April 14, 2014, across a wide range of disciplines. Overall, 66 law firms submitted over 270 nominations. Ropes & Gray was one of a select few firms with three or more winning matters.
