Gregg Galardi, head of Ropes & Gray’s business restructuring practice group, was named a 2021 Bankruptcy MVP by Law360. The Law360 MVP award honors exceptional lawyers who secured “hard-earned successes in high-stakes litigation, complex global matters and record-breaking deals.”

During the past 12 months, Gregg led the successful Chapter 11 reorganization of Centric Brands, a process that included $1.7 billion in debt held by a business that licenses brands such as Calvin Klein, Kate Spade, Disney and others. Gregg’s accomplishments also included the restructurings of Rubio’s Coastal Grill, a California-based restaurant chain, In-Shape Health Clubs, the fitness center operator, Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas and Secure Home Holdings, a Pennsylvania-based home security company.

In the Law360 profile available here, Gregg explained why he entered law, and what he enjoys about the challenges inherent in business restructuring.

"I have an economics background as well as a philosophy background, which means I like to argue, but I also like to do business," he said. "I think a lot of people ... get bitten by the bug, because they like law school because of arguing and the case, but they still want to do corporate transactions. And I believe bankruptcy is the one area where you can do both of those for your entire career."

He adds that attorneys doing bankruptcy work shouldn’t expect a lot of downtime. "I don't think a restructuring attorney really ever gets a full day off," he said. "So you better love what you do."
