Event
October 30, 2023

On October 12—13, Ropes & Gray and Boston College Law School’s Program on Innovation and Entrepreneurship (PIE) co-hosted the 6th Annual International IP Summit.

This year’s event, which took place at Boston College Law School, drew nearly 200 in-person guests and 40 speakers, including lawyers and business executives from technology, finance and life sciences companies, academia, judiciary and government. Attendees examined artificial intelligence (AI)’s impact on technology, life sciences and healthcare companies, including strategic considerations around governance, regulation and ethics of AI.

The summit has earned a reputation for novel, substantive panel discussions and opportunities for meaningful and actionable dialogue and positions Ropes & Gray and Boston College Law School as thought leaders in the global IP and legal community. As in prior years, the summit also included a roundtable discussion over 40 senior legal and business executives, academics, and government officials.

The summit was co-chaired by Ropes & Gray IP transactions partner Regina Sam Penti, retired Ropes & Gray partner, Ed Kelly, and Professor David Olson, Associate Professor at Boston College Law School, and Prof. Sandy Tarrant Associate Clinical Professor at Boston College Law School and Faculty Director for PIE.

The keynote was delivered by Dr. Rumman Chowdhury, CEO and Co-Founder of Humane Intelligence, a nonprofit dedicated to algorithmic access and transparency, an AI fellow at Harvard University, and one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in AI in 2023. In a conversation moderated by Regina Penti, Dr. Chowdhury shared her groundbreaking work on algorithmic bias and transparency, and her thoughts on the current state of the technology, the need for appropriate regulation, ethical issues, and how business should think about AI adoption to drive their objectives.

Litigation & enforcement partners Eva Ciko Carman and Samer Musallam, IP transactions partner Erica Han, data, privacy & cybersecurity partner Rohan Massey, health care partner Christine Moundas, IP transactions partner Rajarshi Banerjee, IP litigation counsel Matthew Shapiro, and IP transactions counsel Joshua Jackson also spoke at the event.
