Ropes & Gray has signed on as a founding sponsor of Out in Law, the first lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) senior leadership initiative for the legal profession. Out in Law held its inaugural leadership summit in New York on March 13, bringing together LGBT and straight ally leaders from the legal profession to discuss issues, network and collectively set a forward-looking agenda for the legal community. Out in Law builds on the success of a similar initiative for financial services firms, called Out on the Street.
Corporate partner Peter Erichsen (Boston) will serve as the Ropes & Gray representative to the leadership committee. The other Ropes & Gray attorney involved in the effort is government enforcement partner Colleen Conry (Washington, D.C.). Former Ropes & Gray associate Ned Sebelius served as a panelist on behalf of the State Department, where he is director for partnerships and works with the Global Equity Partnership, a non-governmental organization dedicated to international LGBT rights.

Ropes & Gray has been recognized as a leader among law firms for diversity, including LGBT issues. In the 2013 Vault survey, the firm was the only Am Law 100 firm to have ranked in the top five in each of the five diversity categories. And every year since 2009, Ropes & Gray has earned the highest possible rating of 100 percent in the Corporate Equality Index (CEI), administered by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. This rating is based on our nondiscrimination and other policies aimed at making the firm a welcoming workplace for LGBT people.
